The Alligator Snapping Turtle, (Macrochelys
Temminckii),
makes a terrible pet.
It grows very quickly and quite large
from the cute little turtle you will find in the
exotic pet market.
But, they require a very specialized
habitat and source of disease free live food.
If properly fed, they can grow very large
in less than a year and can be a dangerous
animal to handle due to the extremely strong
bite force and sharp jaws.
Although not extremely aggressive, they
never lose their fear of people and will
defensively bite when handled or bothered.
These turtles should not be kept under
any circumstances by the general public.
It is illegal to sell to
the general public, any turtle with a shell
diameter of less than 4” and other restrictions
are in place for this turtle because it is
protected from collection throughout its native
range. The
IUCN lists it as a threatened
species, and as of June 14, 2006, it was
afforded some international protection by being
listed as a
CITES 3 species (which put limits on
all international trade in this species.) It is
now endangered in several states where hunting
or collection of the turtle is illegal and
heavily fined, although it is permitted to be
harvested with special permits in several other
states.
Our Alligator Snapping
Turtle was rescued from an exotic pet trader
after it developed a soft tissue infection and
wouldn’t eat.
It originally came from a legal sale
through a permitted turtle farmer where they are
bred and born into captivity for the exotic pet
market, education, research and for food.
Despite our turtle’s initial trouble, it
is now very healthy and is a source of interest
among many people and why we have selected it as
our Virtual Pet Adoptee of the month several
times.
SSS Rescue provides virtual pet adoptions over
the internet! A monthly or annual donation
provides the necessary food and resources to
care your pet. You can view your pet
over the internet any time you like using live
streaming video feeds from our enclosure
facility. The virtualized adoption
donation is fully deductible to the maximum
extent allowed under 501 (c)(3), public charity
status 170 (b) (1) (A) (vi). The
virtualized pet adoption ensures the rescued
animals are properly taken care of while you get
to enjoy watching your pet, anytime.
Feeding schedules will be posted so you can
watch you animal eat. And,
unlike actual pets, you can adopt as many
different kinds of animals as you like and be
sure they are able to enjoy their captive life
as much as possible.
Thank you for supporting SSS Rescue and
virtualized pet adoptions.
